Baker’s Dozen 59, 60 from Virtual Quilter

I have always liked applique quilts with two block designs alternated, and in particular I like mixing diagonal and straight cross designs.

I also like mixing pieced and applique blocks to make a quilt, as all applique blocks are usually way more time consuming than pieced, so mixing them up can save a lot of time.

My Bright Patches 19, 20 from Virtual Quilter

Very similar to yesterday’s designs in colour and style … but a different collection of designs. I have no idea why I have 2 project files so similar, but perhaps I missed my morning coffee one morning!

I am intrigued with the way the X shapes between the corner blocks become an extension of the blocks inserted amongst them.

Fiddlebobs OP 21, 22 from Virtual Quilter

Very interesting!

Very interesting, but maybe a bit too tangled up!

Playing with Baby Blocks 21, 22 from Virtual Quilter

The Electric Quilt Company has produced a very tricky program which can change a block into a quilt layout, which then distorts any block you add to the layout into whatever shape the pieces in the original block are.

The second design has ell and truly changed the appearance of the original setting and the blocks placed in that setting.

I really should play with the more challenging areas of the program.

Annie Clover’s Curved Illusions 31, 32 from Virtual Quilter

No illusion of pieced curves in the first design, but look at the quilting.

Now there are illusions of curves in both pieced and quilting areas of the design.

Aunt Flo’s Quilt 33, 34 from Virtual Quilter

Most of the quilts I have made are sampler album quilts, so I don’t have to make heaps of identical blocks, and they can be a mixture of pieced and and applique blocks, but I love the design above.

I would probably fall in love with it every time I walked into our bedroom, but would be bored stiff making it!

More pieced blocks in the second would make it quicker to put together, but I like more applique in the mix than this one has.

Love the second one, but the first is my favourite.

9 Patch ‘n’ Apps 7×7 27, 28 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting design, interesting colours, interesting applique, interesting pieced blocks, interesting quilting motifs. I like it!

The second design has all the interesting bits of the first, but I like the first one best.

Classy Pieces 7, 8 from Virtual Quilter

I cannot think of a word to describe the design above, but I know that boring is certainly not the word.

Second design, same thoughts as the first.

I love the purple and green combination, but not sure that the background fabric is the best choice.

Log Cabin Leaf Central 61, 62, 63, 64, 65 from Virtual Quilter

I should have checked the colours of the leaves on a couple of the trees in my yard before I chose the colours of the leaves in the design above!

A bit more colourful. I only have two trees which add colour to the autumn garden apart from fruit trees, and most of the trees in my area are evergreen, and drop leaves all year round.

Love the effect of the Courthouse Steps around the outside of the design above.

A few blocks without applique could be a time saver, but also add to a quilt design.

A very interesting ...

Classy Pieces 5, 6 from Virtual Quilter

Love the change of background colour, and the space it provides for quilting to shine.

I was looking for something different in the colour scheme for this project file, and I am surprised at how well purple, yellow and green work together.

Annie Clover and Pieces 39, 40 from Virtual Quilter

I like every design in this project file … the combination of the colours and the blocks seem to work pretty much every way I twist and and shake them up!

Love the second design!

Nice one, but a bit late to start it if you are going to a wedding this weekend.

I like the second one of today’s pair.

EQ and Me at Christmas 11, 12 from Virtual Quilter

I have to admit that just about every day I find time to play with my favourite toy, Electric Quilt 8, it feels like I have just opened a wonderful Christmas gift.

I have to admit that there are some days when I don’t get something I like, but they are not the majority, and quite often when I open up that project file next time I see the designs with fresh eyes, and either can see how to fix them, or discover that they are not so bad after all!

I have learned a lot of what works ...

Log Applique Album 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 from Virtual Quilter

Log Cabin quilts have military precision in the placing of the pieces, add some dainty applique and they immediately look more dainty all over.

The precision is still there but certainly allows the soft touch to shine.

Love the design above … beautiful!

The last two for today are very similar Log Cabin layouts, but the applique blocks are more different …

… and I like the change!

My favourite is top right … love it.

That is all for this week’s Log Cabin retreat, but there will be more next week.

Two very similar designs today … I thought this one was too busy in the corners, so tried to simplify the corners.

I prefer how it was to start with!

How about you?

Inside the Logs 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Inside the logs are appliques and quilting motifs based on those appliques.

Some of the appliques are on plain blocks, some are on light coloured Log Cabin blocks.

Love the one above!

What about a bit of contrast in the background? I like it.

I like the last one … more contrasting background, not a lot of piecing as I don’t enjoy piecing much, and lots of places for quilting without seams!

That’s all the Log Cabin designs for this week’s five minute retreat for quilters, but there will be more next week, mid week!
